West Metro Gets Special Oxygen Masks For Pets
(AP) LAKEWOOD, Colo. West Metro firefighters now have new oxygen masks to use when rescuing the family pet from fires. Best Friends Pet Care donated 15 of the specialized masks to West Metro on Thursday. The masks operate like those used on people. The difference is the special masks have a cone-shape to fit over an animal's snout.A fire burned through the Best Friends Pet Care facility last month. More than 20 dogs were hurt."The oxygen masks the firefighters use on humans just isn't the same," said Stephanie Ellis of Best Friends Pet Care. "It's flat, we need something that is cone-shaped, such as this mask, so we can put it over the snout of the dog."The design of the masks helps deliver oxygen to pets that suffer from smoke inhalation during a fire. .
Cathy M. Rosenthal: Invisible fencing draws mixed responses
Dear Cathy: In response to the column, "Cat owners ask if invisible fences work" (Feb. 4), our family uses a wireless electronic fence for our dogs. Although the instructions recommend two weeks of training, we've trained in as few as two days. Last year, we had a small dog that stuck close to home, so we didn't use an electronic collar, with disastrous results. He went into the woods after a wild animal and didn't return. We found his body the next day, and our 4-year-old child was devastated. I recommend electronic fences, especially for those who live out in the country, where it will keep your dogs in the yard, out of the street and away from wild animals. The only downside is that it doesn't keep out other dogs, so we sometimes have an issue with strays or pet owners who let their animals run free.
